There was an article in the
April 2009 Center for Creative Leadership Newsletter that got my attention this week.
It read:
Did you know…That three personality traits are predictors of career derailment?
Leadership careers can go off the rails for a number of reasons, preventing executives from achieving their full potential. A recent CCL study found that career derailment is more likely to occur if an executive:
Is less trusting of people;
Is more conceptual and abstract in his style of thinking
Tends to reveal personal information about himself
Unpacking point #1 and thinking about it in the context of our families today, there are ways we can help our children onto the path for a successful career, whatever career they chose.
For example, we can help them to become more trusting of people by understanding how they are wired and giving then the skills to identifying how others are wired. As a matter of fact, in this weeks’ My Wired Style Podcast there is a great example on how to have family game night move from an argument laden experience that ends in everyone on time out and frustrated because of the emotional reaction to the mistrust of the motive of a sibling to a fun family night, helping each child move into their strengths.
Once we know how others are wired, we cut through our belief that everyone looks at life through our lens, but rather we understand that one of us may be wired to be compliant with the rules of the board game, because its important to them. While another is wired to just make it a great, fun, experience.
The core of the CCL article was that for leaders, "Understanding how their personality and behaviors may be perceived by others is important for managers and executives who want to continue to grow and succeed in their careers,"
Well the same is true for our families,
by understanding how to identify wired styles and successful strategies for navigating them, we can empower our children with important skills that can be a cornerstone critical success factor later on in their lives and in their careers.
So brave up families, order in pizza and plan a family game night, but have one that is wired for success!
