Are you looking for advice....or approval?

I’ve been mulling over something for the past few days. In reading Chris Guillebeau’s “The Art of Non Conformity” he talks about having a “Guru-free philosophy.” I LOVE that.Over the years, I've had a guru for nearly everything. Fitness. God. Music. Lifestyle. Parenting. And while there is a place for one to learn from another farther down the road….it is important that their influence is one that encourages you to proceed on your own journey, not mimic theirs.Human nature being what it is, we…See More

Rushing creativity

I asked Molly if she’d consider drawing illustration for some of my writing projects.“It’s not like I can just sit down and write something,” she said adding, “it takes times to be creative.”Ah, I love it when my 14-year-old is such a sage.It DOES take time to be creative. Perhaps you’ve heard the story (fable?) of how Bill Gates’ mom looked in on him just sitting on his bed apparently idle. “What are you doing?” she asked. His reply…”Thinking mom. I’m thinking.”For kids in school, this…See More

Better Late Than Early!

I had a conversation with the kids’ principal yesterday. Mr. White is a soft spoken, gentle spirited man with many years experience both in the classroom and administration. So when he said, “Do you know what I wish schools would do?” I was all ears. Something edgy? I thought. I love edgy! Some cool out-of-the-box approach? I was all ears.“I wish they’d start school later for kids,” he said. Okay. So it’s not some new edgy approach. But anymore, it is a RADICAL idea in education. So many…See More

D as in Disease?

As in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DISEASE? Well according to one of the experts cited in this article, ADHD is a disease process. And it can be observed with biological markersBut that test won’t be available any time soon, especially because there appear to be a large number of variations in DNA that predispose a person to ADHD, the article states.A large number of variations in DNA.…See More

The nonesense of earning a living

Leave to my good friend and mentor, Chris Davis to drop this bomb of a quote on Facebook:“The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery….The true business of people should be to go back to school and thinkabout whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody camealong and told them they had to…See More

You are called to be an artist

Here’s an excerpt from my favorite poem, A Psalm of Life by Longfellow. (If you’ve received an email from you, you’ll recognize the “Lives of great men” line as I use in in my signature.)Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime,And, departing, leave behind usFootprints on the sands of time ;This poem came to mind as I was thinking of all the great people who have inspired me. There are many- from writers to artists to musicians. And then there’s the other artists that we…See More

But who gets the kids?

There’s a custody battle going on all across this land. But no one seems to be asking the question- Who gets the kids? Let me rephrase my query- Where should a child spend the lion’s share of his day- at home? Or in a government facility? This battle’s been going on for some time. I picked up a 1936 Better Homes and Gardens magazine in an antique store the other day. One of the articles was on deciding if nursery school was the right thing to do for your toddler. The writer went on to say that…See More
